How to set up your wakesurf board: traction pads and fins
Kanuk wakesurf boards come with traction pads and fins. Here's how to set them up before your first ride.
Before you start
- Set up indoors or in the shade, at room temperature. The adhesive sticks best when it's warm and dry.
- Have a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol ready.
- Plan to let the pads sit overnight before you ride.
Putting on traction pads
- Clean the deck. Wipe where the pads will go with rubbing alcohol to remove wax, dust and fingerprints. Let it dry completely.
- Find your stance. Stand on the board on carpet or grass with your feet where they feel natural. Your back foot sits over the fins near the tail, your front foot near the middle of the board.
- Dry-fit first. Lay the pads on the deck with the backing still on. Mark the corners lightly with tape or a washable marker.
- Peel and stick. Peel the backing slowly and lay the pad down from one end to the other, pushing out air bubbles as you go.
- Press hard. Press firmly over the whole pad, especially the edges.
- Wait. Leave it at least 24 hours before riding so the adhesive can set.
Installing fins
- Check that each fin box is clear of sand and dirt.
- Slide each fin into its box with the fin's leading (curved) edge facing the nose of the board.
- Tighten with the screws and key included with your board. Snug is enough; don't over-tighten.
- Wiggle each fin to check it's solid before you ride, and re-check now and then through the season.
Looking after your board
- Rinse with fresh water after riding, especially after salt water.
- Store out of direct sun and heat, like a hot car or boat deck. A board rack keeps it off the floor.
- Take fins out for travel and storage so they don't get knocked.
